Grandmaster Elusia Skypiercer rules The Void from The Dread Fortress and presides over every Deathmatch. Played by Caustic Phoenix (Bec).

Who she is

  • Retired from battle, she yearns for the days of glory and bloodshed, so every Sunday she has The Arbiter curate a spectacle in her arena.
  • She is of a very long-lived people. Nobody truly knows her age, and her own claims about it (like “I am 284”) are lies.
  • Mostly a martial fighter with extraordinary abilities. She can also use some magic, including smaller-scale time magic (“I speed up time around you”).
  • She wields the Grandmaster’s Bow, the Oathbow, given to her in Skypiercer. She has vast, colorful wings. Her hair was blue in Skypiercer and is blonde by Season 1.
  • She briefly wore an eyepatch in Season 7 after scratching her eye playing darts with Thea. A memo went out: don’t bring it up.

History

  • Childhood: daughter of Faucius Golden Shield. On the Night of the Long Shadow, about 700 years before Season 1, her uncle Agdrel killed her father and seized the Dread Fortress as The Shadow King. The Knights of Chaos gave their lives in a blood rite to send young Elusia away to Cor’thun, outside the Void.
  • Cor’thun: she was raised there and trained in combat by Empress Juntikar, an ancestor of Emperor Thornos, and outlived her.
  • Skypiercer: about 400 years before Season 1, Vythorn (the Arbiter) crossed into Cor’thun and brought her home. With Atalantos and Kaja she defeated the Shadow King after his 300-year reign, became Grandmaster, and began the Deathmatches.
  • After Skypiercer: Kaja was her love until Kaja’s natural death.
  • Seasons 1–3: the Arbiter secretly built an army of revived champions and tried to take her throne in Battle for the Crown. She defeated him and made him serve in sackcloth and chains through Season 3.
  • Season 4: the Shadow King returned, killing the Arbiter in the Season 3 finale. She became his captive in all but name (“the Grandmaster, but only a name”), wearing gold rune bracelets and running the Deathmatches for him. The Shadow King revived Kaja to fight for him (S4E1).
  • Season 7: the Season of Vigilance: “Things are changing in the Void and danger is edging along.”

Relationships

  • The Shadow King (Agdrel): her uncle and her father’s killer. He loved her mother and calls Elusia “daughter,” claiming he was more of a father to her than her own (“I raised you”). He gave her a Bop-It when she was 12.
  • Faucius Golden Shield: her father, killed by his brother Agdrel. His golden-shield portrait hangs in the Dread Fortress.
  • Her mother: never named. The Shadow King loved her, and killed her husband.
  • Kaja: her companion in Skypiercer and later her love.
  • Atalantos: her companion in Skypiercer.
  • Empress Juntikar: her combat teacher in Cor’thun.
  • The Arbiter (Vythorn): her servant in all things. He served her father before her, brought her home, betrayed her, died for her dog, and came back. “There’s no Grandmaster and Arbiter. There’s the Grandmaster and then the Arbiter.” He’s known her for about 1,000 years.
  • Doug the Pug: her beloved undead cyborg pug.
  • Thea: the Arbiter’s assistant, whom she supports more than he does.
  • Her living family: undetermined.

Themes

Elusia’s story is about death and a very long life: accepting that the people around her will die, and that this is what makes them matter. It’s one reason the Deathmatches celebrate death.
