The Arbiter, also known as Vythorn the Endless Scholar, is the Grandmaster’s servant in all things and the curator of every Deathmatch. Played by Mudcat (Drew). Mudcat also plays The Shadow King.

Who he is

  • A true master of chaos magic and “master of all time and space.” He opens the portals, picks (or delegates the picking of) champions, and runs the arena.
  • Much older than Elusia. He served her father before the Night of the Long Shadow. He has a birthday (“timeless, has no birthday” was a lie).
  • Look: glowing white wings (they turned white from the effort of making the Box of Chaos), his rings (eight colored gems), Italian leather shoes (probably fake), and a rusty, seasoned metal chair, which is “his thing.”
  • He has three nipples with his motto, “When you can, you should,” tattooed across them.
  • He keeps a ledger of everyone he’s saved and the favors they owe, and a kill list. He can be capricious.

History

  • Skypiercer: Vythorn crossed out of the Void to bring Elusia home. Afterwards he resurrected Agdrel, ripped out his soul, rearranged AGDREL into GERALD and sealed it in The Box of Chaos.
  • Seasons 1–2: he secretly revived fallen champions and built an army (“thousands of thousands”), under the box’s corrupting influence. He co-opted the Children/Servants of the Void. The Faithful resisted him (Fate of the Arbiter, Fate of the Faithful).
  • Battle for the Crown: he tried to overthrow the Grandmaster with his army of resurrected champions and failed. He wore sackcloth and chains through Season 3 as punishment, and was freed for good behavior in the Season 3 finale.
  • Season 3 finale: he died stepping in front of the Shadow King’s attack on Doug the Pug.
  • Into the Mirror and Vythorn’s Return: his soul went to the Sands of Eternity, escaped, was sidetracked by Fil, gained the tome Morir’s Cataclysm, and used it to destroy the Shadow King’s body.
  • Season 5 (the Season of Fate): a vision of himself ruling as the Lord of Fate, which only he lived through. Some of its champions and things (like Double Sun Cola) carried over into reality.
  • Season 6: he created Thea.
  • Season 7: now “upper management.” He bought the 100-floor wizard’s tower he wanted (S7E8).

Quotes

  • “We don’t put people in a labyrinth for them to finish it. We want them to die.”
  • “Nobody’s in charge of the box. It’s chaos in a box.”
  • “When you can, you should.”

S4E5 — Toxicity — Toocher the Toxic v Sho Nin

did the Fortress taxes for years, in symbols; dead (killed by the Shadow King).

S4E8 — Blood Rain — Fatale v Claudia

mentioned as having once done “the talking” at the Deathmatch.

Into the Mirror 15–16, Old Friends - Sky

  • Situation: Dead and in the Sands of Eternity. He was murdered in the Dread Fortress (“I died in the throne room”) by the Shadow King, whom he believes is now holding the Grandmaster hostage “or worse.” He had been stuck in an illusion in the library where books kept turning to sand.
  • Last memories: being in chains serving the Grandmaster, killing the party, then “lunch.”
  • His account of the past:
    • He rescued the exiled Elusia after her father’s death and brought her home to challenge her uncle, the Shadow King.
    • He then created the Box of Chaos to hold the Shadow King’s soul, siphoned its power, and was clouded and whispered to by it.
    • He claims the King, not he, killed the party, and says he doesn’t know whether he obliterated Orin.
  • His relationship with Elusia: says he has known her “a thousand years.” Per Elianna’s knowledge, she named him Arbiter 700 years ago and he has served her for 700 years.
  • Stated aims: Grandmaster safe, Shadow King dead, “my power back.”
  • Size and power: about 8 ft tall. Weaker here than before. Can still rewind a moment in time (undoing Elianna’s tackle) and grant Fortune’s Favor and Chronal Shift rerolls. Cannot do large time reversal in the dampened area outside the library. Casts thunder step.
  • Other actions: made the tome disappear “into” his keeping. Says he did not know for sure where the mirror would send the party.

Into the Mirror 17, The Way Out

  • Travels with the party.
  • Surrendered to Sky by throwing down a ceremonial dagger, then urged Sky to kill the party. Sky: “There’s something wrong with you.”
  • Noticed the library’s dampening fade and stayed silent.
  • Deciphered and worked the Oasis mechanism with Toddleheim’s help while hasted.
  • Used the orrery as a one-person portal and abandoned the party: “Nothing personal, the Grandmaster has to be saved.” Sky’s reflection showed Sky picking Vythorn’s pocket.

S4E14, Vythorn’s Return Part 1 (Vythorn alone in the in-between; the God of Fate)

  • Status: he left his companions inside the mirror through a portal, which the narration calls a betrayal. He is sworn to return to the Void and to Elusia. He asks “Am I still dead?”; the in-between is “not really a dead place.”
  • Losses and habits:
    • Lost his Italian leather boots to the ink creature and is now barefoot.
    • Wears no socks with good boots.
    • Can’t paddle a boat and can’t swim (“never done so a day in your life”).
    • Allergic to cats (or claims to be).
    • “Not much of a bowler.”
    • Has a dry sense of humor and has “never seen much use for it.”
  • Magic:
    • Time-bending. His prestidigitation turns back time on his clothes; his witch bolt drags a past storm into the present.
    • His eyes glow milky void and multicolored lightning crackles at his fingertips when he casts.
    • In the in-between his magic works only with permission: dispel magic, witch bolt and blink failed; gust and prestidigitation worked.
  • Childhood: his earliest shown memory is a young boy in the rain, hands burning with magical fire he controls, outside a burning two-story house full of screams. Phil says he lost his parents to his own abilities. “My family would say too much potential.”
  • Relationships and history:
    • Had teachers and many friends.
    • Once would have called the Shadow King (Agdrel) a friend.
    • Spared the dying Shadow King to keep his power and knowledge, kept him “in a box,” and used that power to keep order in the Void while the Grandmaster held her games.
    • Claims he brought Elusia back across the planes and into the Dread Fortress.
    • Phil says he was at times dissatisfied with Elusia’s rule and with her father’s rule, and that the idea of overthrowing Elusia was a seed he planted. He answers: “maybe? Sometimes, who’s not?”
  • Ambition: “I want to control fate… I will be the God of Fate.” He accepted Phil’s bargain: control of the fates of everyone in the Void, possible elevation, and the quest for the Testaments of Morir’s Cataclysm.

S4E15, Vythorn’s Return Part 2

  • Introduces himself as “right hand to the Grandmaster of the Void, or Arbiter.”
  • Barefoot after losing his Italian leather boots in the swamp.
  • Abilities shown:
    • Time magic (chronal shift): his eyes glow milky voidy white and multicolored lightning crackles. He reverses about 10 seconds, forces rerolls, and slows jaws mid-bite. It could only briefly freeze Fil’s hourglass.
    • Spells: mage armor, invisibility, minor illusion, quickened slow, mind sliver, chaos bolt (an orb of multicolored chaos lightning), hold person, haste, dispel magic.
  • Poor tracker (“more of the book type”), and not strong.
  • Admits he’s ignorant of the ruins.
  • Stabbed Ise to feed the door; “I know where all the organs are.”
  • Tried to hit Kuro; Biff stopped him.
  • Bones and death “kind of remind me of home.”
  • Believed his uncontrolled chaos killed his parents. Ise reveals that Agdrel, the Shadow King, killed them with his own hands.
  • Vows to unravel the Shadow King and then control fate across the Void. Fil backs him and grants the Testaments of Morir’s Cataclysm.
  • Called a “demon” by himself. Race: “doesn’t really have a race” (table talk).

S4E17 (Season Finale) - Vythorn’s Return Part 3

  • Returned to the Void from Giant’s Breath by Fil.
  • Gained the Testaments of Morir’s Cataclysm’s power. The words burned into his flesh, and he combines Morir magic with chaos energy.
  • Powers shown this episode:
    • space-time blinking, lightning, turning back time, and control of storms
    • Morir portals that open toothed maws into hellscapes
    • a “coffin of light” prison
    • mind control that turns eyes white and void (goblins), and mass paralysis (Acolytes)
  • Says the Shadow King killed his family. Agdrel confirms he orphaned him and was saving him “like a dessert.”
  • Declared himself Lord of Fate under a contract with Fil.
  • Imprisoned Elusia rather than killing her, using his own old chains.
  • Proclaimed himself the Void’s rightful ruler “by the rules of our Deathmatches.”
